Recovery Part I

This is the second part in “Building the House“ compilation.

One thing that annoys me with most books is they put the recovery and nutrition chapters last.  After you’ve read through the should dos, the shouldn’t dos, the could dos, and would dos; you put the book down and probably stop reading altogether!  You’ve missed two [...]

The Best "Candy"

Is there such a thing as healthy candy?  I don’t think so…  Wikipedia’s definition of candy is: a confection made from a concentrated solution of sugar in water, to which flavorings and colorants are added.  The word candy comes from the Sanskrit meaning “piece of sugar”.  Hard to believe any food item which is defined as [...]

Review: Tanita Weigh Scales

Tanita was the first company to design and manufacture body fat monitoring scales for in-home use. The technology you get when you buy a home scale is based on the same advanced technology found in the professional body composition analyzers used by doctors, medical centers, professional athletic teams, fitness clubs and personal trainers.  Tanita continue to [...]

Does More = Better?

Before this year, I ran at least 60 kms a week.  My reasoning was I thought there was a hypothetical minimum number I needed to keep my “base” but also allow me to continue progressing as a runner.  There wasn’t much science behind this and it’s showing.

Enter 2010 and the biggest running week I’ve done all year is 60 kms!  [...]

What Have you Done for Me Lately?

After last weeks surprising podium finish at the TTT, this week it was back to a “normal” life; low training volume while I focused on being rested.  It’s a weird sensation to be going full tilt for 10 hours then not letting the heart rate climb out of zone 1.

Finishing a race can [...]

Triple T Ohio – 4 Triathlons in 3 days

This is not your typical event.  This is a weekend consumed by triathlon.  Each day is a physical and mental challenge to keep you moving.  Over 3 days, the body will have raced longer than an Ironman distance.  However, the race is broken up into “manageable” distances.

Here is a recap from my perspective.

Day 1 [...]

Diagnosing the Triple T

The weeks have flown by since my last race in California 70.3.  My time has been filled with a lot of training but even more with soul searching; where to next?

Racing has started to become a large portion of my life, especially in the absence of a true 9-5 white/blue collar job.  Getting up [...]

20/60/20 vs. 30/50/20

Protein/Carbohydrates/Fat

This week I’m paying careful attention to how my body reacts to a 30/50/20 diet.  On Monday, I plugged the percentages into Excel to see how much of each I’d have to consume at each meal.  Here’s the breakdown:

Calories Protein Carbs Fat 3000 900 1500 600 gms 225 375 67

The 3000 calories [...]

Nailing the Early Morning Workout

There are not many people I know that enjoy the early morning sessions.  I’m talking the suns not up, the street lights are on and your eye lids still have “sleepies” in the corners.  Getting the quality nutrients in before hitting the gym or going out fora run can at least make you feel [...]

Singles, Doubles, Triples

This has been my life of late.  Bouncing from one workout to the next.  I’ve learned some really interesting things about my body and training long in general.

One, my body hates to run at the end of the day.  It’s not so much the mileage or the wear on my legs but after [...]

All Crap

So here’s a story for you.  I wouldn’t have shared this except this scenario happened to me twice, in the same store, in the same place, and almost at the same time.

Last Sunday I was at Bushtakah’s discount sale on the hunt for gels.  I ran out so I wanted to take full advantage [...]
