Getting A Sniff
A weekend in the life:
Friday 5pm – Work is over for another week! Today I took off completely so I drive home.
7pm – Costco after a dog walk with Figs.
9pm – Help Amanda make sure she hasn’t forgotten anything for her race in the morning.
9:45pm – Hit the hay (yup, out before 10pm on a Friday).
Saturday 6:00am – It’s wake up time (for Amanda!) I go back to sleep till 6:45am.
7:30am – Dog has been walked. I get ready to ride over to see Amandas start.
8:15am – Left way tooo early. Amanda is ready to go. Swim little fish swim.
8:30am – Boom, there off.
8:31am – 2 Cheaters run down the beach instead of swim. Husband and wife no doubt.
9:00am – Amanda exits the water and drops her goggles. Luckily I am there to pick it up.
9:05am – I go for a ride. Not very amusing to watch triathletes struggle to get out of their wetsuits.
10:15am – Get back and watch the athletes come of their bikes. No good crashes. A lot of close calls though.
11:00 am – Watch Amanda do her run laps. Also, I get bit by some ants. Huuuggge welts.
11:03 am – Amanda finishes her race. Yeah! It got really hot. Time to roll home.
12:00am – Take the dog for a roller blade. Figs isn’t in the mood to run because of the heat so we cut it short.
12:30am – Lunch. Yum. Burp.
1:00pm – Nap and pack for my race.
3:03pm – Out the door: destination Kingston.
4:45pm – Preview bike course. Not too shabby. A couple of kickers at the end.
5:08pm – Pick up race kit. Steal some gels.
5:47pm – Check into Queens University. Oh what it’s like to be a college student again!
6:02pm – Cook dinner on my Coleman stove. Chicken, rice and veggies.
7:05pm – Checkout the run course with my bike. Get lost and confused. Need a GPS for my bike.
8:45pm – Start winding it down with a nice read from the “Strength and Conditioning” text book. Has a great ending!
9:20pm – Lights out.
Sunday 5:45am – Race day. And whats that sound? Rain?
6:00am – Packed, fed and ready to roll.
6:15am – Ride bike to start. It’s damp but not too bad.
6:16am – Soaked.
6:17am – Why did I not bring a rain jacket?
6:45am – Warm up on bike followed by some quick sprints.
7:15am – Rain rain go away. Sit in wet suit. Can’t get me wet now haha!
8:00am – Race delayed because people won’t get behind the imaginary line.
8:01am – Were off into Lake Ontario.
8:05am – Swum over a million times. Panic rising.
8:08am – Hit by 2 foot and then 3 foot high swells. I guess it can get worse.
8:17am – I think I manage to make it half way. I hate swimming and triathlons.
8:40am – Get yanked out of the water by some army guys. Yeah they were suppose to do that.
8:43am – Hammer time.
9:44am – On course for a 40km/h average
9:47am – Hit a damn pot hole and screw up my aerobars. I keep falling off the nose!
10:10am – Roll back into Kingston under rain. Witnessed a guy fall down on a cast iron bridge. Ouch.
10:13am – Time to pick off the remainders on the run.
10:15am – Soaked.
10:17am – Offered a sponge. Who wants a sponge when it’s raining?
10:35am – Passed 2 people. Up to 8th overall.
10:50am – It’s like running in a river. Puddles everywhere….
10:55am – Pass another guy and slot into 7th. Disappointed because of my swim.
10:57am – Finished. I want to do another one tomorrow. Or maybe the next day (my calves hurt!).
11:00am – Soaked and have no dry clothes.
11:01am – Run to the car to get something warm.
11:20am – After getting lost I find the car and sneak back into Queens (steal a towel too) and have a shower. Nice.
11:30am – Waiting begins. 2 hours till awards. Wow.
1:30pm – Get 1st age group, a consolation prize. Next year damn it. Next year.

Great report Cliff. Next year dammit!
