Great weekend for playing here in Otown. Under sunny skies on Saturday, over 30 athletes participated in the inargual Bytown 171 comprising of a 100K ride + 10K run (on Sunday another 40K ride + 21.1K run).
The Worden-Rogers duo of TJ and Cliff, participated in this great charity with all proceeds ($20, 000+) going to the Ottawa food bank.
For TJ, his journey started on Friday morning making the 13 hour commute to Ottawa bringing his girlfriend Alisha for the festivities.
TJ had never done a 10K specific race or had a half marathon time for the year so it was going to be a godo way to gauge himself for his debut Ironman in August. As his coach, I saw a lot of great things as he did two personal bests, both in the 10K (46:32) and half (1:43:46). Not to mention he did these on back to back days with 150K+ of riding!
For Cliff, he managed to eek out a PB in the 10K (34:39) finishing first out of the Bytown 171 team (55th overall). On Sunday he played the role of pace bunny (1:40:00) and manged to come within in 9 seconds of his time (1:39:51). He got rock start treatment from all the spectators as they loved to see the bunnies out!
As for the riding, it couldn’t have been better. Both brothers were in the speedster group which manged average speeds of 40km/h at times. It helps to have 15 guys all in tri bikes!
This was a great event and they hope to be back next year to play again!
