Training Camp # 1 In The Books

It was only a small showing but the first LMS camp went better than expected.

Day 1: The weather was sunny and cool as we rode 130K.  With over 12, 000 feet of elevation change, this was a gruesome day in the saddle as we tackled “the Kank” which winded it’s way through the White Mountains National Forest.  After the ride, we quickly transitioned for a 6K run.

Day 2: Again, we were treated to mild weather.  On the agenda was another 130K day which led us to some very remote sections of the park.  We discovered that a portion of our ride (almost at the halfway point) was completely covered in snow.    Instead of turning around we forged on but after an hour of riding/walking/riding, we had to turn back.   We got in 4 solid hours of riding + a hilly trail run in the evening.

Day 3: We were back to sub zero temperatures on this day.  From out cozy beds we decided it would be a running day.   So we packed up the car and drove near the base of Mt. Washington.  Although it was closed, we found a trail that led us on to the auto way.  We started at mile 2 and made it to almost mile 5 (4500 feet) before having to be turned back because of the frigid temperatures.   True to its legend, Mt. Washington has the most volatile weather in North America.

The day wasn’t finished as we managed to squeeze in a hard 90min ride, bracing ourselves against the wind and cold.

Day 4: The final day.  The wind had been wreaking havoc all week but today…  it was at its best.   With a constant headwind of 25mph we headed out in search of some tough climbs.  I kid you not what took us 2 hours to ride, took us just 45 minutes on the return!  We added on some extra miles in the end to make 60.

So that’s a summary of the trip!  I’ve got lots of pics (to come) and videos (to come).

Trip Totals: 400K biking.  30K running.  Money: $280

See you next year!
