I think one of the reasons I consider myself a part time athlete is that I just haven’t found a sport that I can totally devote myself to. I like to try sports and games to figure out what’s fun, what’s not, and how incredible painful horseback riding is.
So with respect to that, I tried a new sport last week…ok ok maybe curling is not a sport, and it also may not have been my first time (but the only other time I was in a alcohol induced haze…which in curling actually appears to be normal), but this time I gave it my best effort—sans alcohol. We spent four hours on the sheet (I pick up lingo very fast), and played a full game, 3 on 4.
We were on the team with a man down, but thanks to my world renowned endurance, fatigue didn’t play a huge role in our defeat, just our ability to throw too hard. From this adventure I would like to pass on some advice and insight, take it if you want:
1) Four hours in a rink, doing minimal exercise = cold. Dress warmly, with gloves, toque, rum, and do not wear jeans with holes in them, after all the lunging and sliding on ice, the holes will cause your jeans to develop into a full set of rags.
2) Curling is truly an activity where women and men are equals, I see no reason why there should be separate men’s and women’s curling…lets just join together in a big group hug and throw some rocks.
3) If a geologist goes curling, make sure he doesn’t bring his rock hammer—the curling rocks cost between $500-1500 each, and the curling club does not appreciate sampling.
4) If you’re going to strap a piece of Teflon to only one foot, then try to walk on ice…make sure you stretch your groin!!
