… under the belt. It started off with a rather rocky start … ANOTHER snow and ice storm creating havoc for running on our roads … then some weird head/neck thing that caused a black out in the pool on Wednesday. Nothing like goin’ under to create a stir in the ol’ lanes I’ll tell ya! It wasn’t nearly as exciting as it might have been – a domino effect from a “too tight” swim cap which caused a blinding pain in my head relieved by some aggressive accupressure on my part resulting in a pinched nerve with a blackout reaction. All good fun. More than anything it brought home how tenuous this whole staying heathy to train thing is. One little upset and my best laid plans come tumbling down around me. And that ISN’T a place I want or am ready to go.
On the upside, this was my final in my first 3 week build of the season. I did some good solid work and know where I need to go to get fitter. Stronger. My Saturday run was using my new heart rate zones and yes, it was definitely not “comfortable” but infinitely DOable. Which makes me happy.
And. AND. We got out for our first outdoor ride of the season. Oh sure. There was snow on the ground. Icey bits along the shoulder. A tad chilly heading into the wind. But the sun actually came out. And I could see LANDSCAPE and and THINGS. No basement walls on THIS day. For all you SoCal folk that whinge when it gets below 50°F, welcome to February riding in MY world.

First ride outside in 2009

Ma, don’t drown. I will send you my floaties to keep your head above water.
Remember to rest hard this week!
Dang it! Shoulda worn the Duck Hat over my cap. Next time.
So how cold was it? I got out this weekend too, but it was a lovely 55F. nice spring weather peaking out at us.
Sheba, it was hovering around the freezing mark. The bonus was that the sun was out and with its power right now, felt warmer than that. Riding WITH the wind at any rate!
