Whatcha Eating Figs?

I’ve been asked this a couple of times so I thought I may as well post about it.  Because of my intrigue/border line obsession with food (see a couple of posts below), people want to know what I feed my pup.  Do I only restrict him the the lettuce diet that I eat or, heaven forbid, give him treats.

Truth is I feed him regular puppy chow.  I have done some homework looking into good brands but there isn’t much difference between them.  To my knowledge “the best food for your dog” is really vague.  There are however bad foods (usually the cheapest) which I stay away from.

I’ve talked to the vet about what Figs should eat pointing out that all brands (Iams, Pedigree, etc.) all have the exact same food make up.  By this I mean the percentage of ingredients added to the food.  There hasn’t been one brand that has really stood out.  Also, the vet added that just because it says “Hollistic or All Natural” doesn’t mean that the food is.

For people there is a National Food Institution which all food is governed.  For animals and dogs there are no regulations.  Companies can say there food is this and that but can lie about what is really going into their food (think of all the waste products from animals).

So, how can you help your dog eat a little better?  Well, you could give it a multi-vitamin.  You could also cook for it everyday (people food).  Or, what I do is pay attention to what he/she is doing.  Does the dog hate the food?  Does he/she seem lathargic compared to other dogs of the same breed?

I know for Figs he had problems with dandruff which we cured by giving him peanut butter.  Why?  Well the food he was eating didn’t seem to be giving him enough fats for his coat.  Peanut butter once a day cured that.

I’m all for suggestions in what your feeding your dogs (or what you did).  Since this is my first dog I’m learning.  But I’ll tell you this, any animal that can eat there own poop probably isn’t going to care what they eat.  So the only thing you can really do is pay attention to its demeanor.

Wow.  I should have been a vet.  Probably pays more than this gig.  Although they don’t get to break bats.  Ha ha.

Anywho my lunch break is over!

Happy (-39 is to damn cold) Trainin!
