… waiting for my body to heal itself.

On My Back
So. Remember last week I was all gungho about being back in bizness? And I mentioned, ever so fleetingly, that my knee/hamstring was a bit sore after my run? Well guess what?!? It manifested into a full blown back outtage, the likes of which I haven’t known in years.
Oh. Joy.
A frantic trip to my PT confirmed that I was having disc issues. Some IFC (aka tingly heaty pads), acupuncture, CST (aka Witchiness according to my coach) later, Jill assures me I’ll be up and around in no time. But. Right now I’m grounded. And not even grounded grounded but “flat-on-my-back” grounded.
So. I surf. I type things into google and learn about nutrition … beta-alanine anyone? and back geometry and whatever else pops into this overactive mind of mine. The thing about beta-alanine came up because of an answer Ben Greenfield gave on his podcast yesterday from a question I posed to him. Some good information about getting more blood to restricted areas if that’s of interest to anyone but myself.
Included in this week’s podcast, Ben was talking about some studies about compression socks for runners. You must have seen them? Those goofy looking knee socks that have been making their way into races around the province over the last year? Well seems they are worth trying out. A full 30 second/mile faster AND 90seconds longer? Oh I’m thinking they are DEFINITELY worth checking out. I need all the help I can get! Now where can I get a compression back brace??
EDIT: Thanks to Eagle Eye Ben for pointing out that my numbers (per usual) were just a TAD off. lol That SHOULD be half a mile/hour faster … but still worth the risk of looking goofy! Thanks Ben!

That’s a half mile per hour faster, not 30 seconds per mile!
Ben
Doh! I’ll go back and edit that Ben, thanks for the heads up!
I know your net is slow but they’ve been posting some Lance videos on youtube i’ve never seen before. just put in Tour de France in the search engine for youtube. the one i was watching is a 1/11 series (8minutes long so you can upload rather fast). kills a good hour or 2.
hope your feeling better. i’ll start working on that back compression!

Oh, so sorry to hear about your back. Take it easy, keep your positive attitude, and forward any good stuff you’re learning. Re: the socks. The first I’d seen them (not in person, unfortunately)was on Paula Radcliffe, the English record-breaker marathoner (2:17:18 in Chicago in 2002!). They are her signature ‘gear’ – with her finishing times who cares if you look goofy!
