The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Or “What it’s like to live in a multi-sport obsessed household”.

  1. There is always someone that is willing to swim or bike or run with you. Okay so maybe not with you. Perhaps pummel you.
  2. If you have a question on … training? drills? nutrition? equipment? form? strategies? …why yes the list goes on ad nauseum… There will be 5 different opinions. Each assuming THEIR’S is the correct answer.
  3. As lowest person on the totem pole you get the most awesome hand-me-downs. There is no downside to this.
  4. You have a built-in support team and get to visit some wonderful parts of the world. Though you will be asked to get up at ungodly hours and stand for the better part of the day, cheering and clapping, hanging onto sweaty pre-race clothing, and have Power Bars, blankets and extra water bottles stuffed in every available pocket.
  5. As lowest person on the totem pole, everyone is faster and more fit than you. Great inspiration. Or permanent defeat. It’s your decision.
  6. If your coach is being a dickhead idiot (but not YOU Coach!), you have 10 empathetic ears to bend.
  7. Having 5 other people get as excited as you when you find fresh fruit at half off or a bakery that makes whole grain artisanal bread.
  8. Arranging a vacation as training ground with space enough for everyone including a functioning washer/dryer, kitchen and a place to store all the bikes.
  9. Being wakened up just after dawn on said vacation because “we need to get out before it gets too hot and oh! the ride is a million vertical feet today.”
  10. THE best cheering squad at the end of the race. THAT makes it all worth while!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Notes To Self:

  • Integrating training during Christmas? Not so easy.
  • Listen to your body. Sometimes it’s OK to walk instead of run.
  • Running (or biking or swimming) in a different location can make a run-of-the-mill workout into something fun. Do it more often!

Workout

  • Planned Time: 7:35
  • Actual Time: 4:55
  • Swim Distance: 2520 m
  • Bike Distance: 58 km
  • Run Distance: 8 km

  • Whats the star on the top of the tree?

    Happy new year!

  • I didn’t realize that everyone in your house was a trifreak! #8 struck me, because even though there was only 3 of us in training last summer, we did enjoy our vacation location for the great lake to swim across. Picturing all those bikes!

  • Woodlot_Manager

Where do you train Jen? Pool and track or outdoors or both?

  • Jen

Vincent: That would be Mr. Stephen Colbert on the top of our tree. Gee. D’ya think we’re fans?!? ;)

Sheba: Yep. All 5 of us. With at least 3 bikes per person. A LOT of bikes!

Pieter: Swimming in the pool right now but in the lake mostly when the weather warms up. I try to run and bike outside as often as possible. Otherwise it’s a trainer for the bike and indoor track for running. The joy of living in this frozen wasteland called Canada!

  • Oh, I LOVE that star!
You guys are just TOO ATHLETIC! I took my morning walk today and strained my foot! I’m exhausted just looking at the biking.

What’s cool about it is that, let’s say there’s a finite amount of sportiness in the world… you’re making up for the fact that I stay inside with my Wii Fit!

    Happy New Year to you!
