Flu-by-Four

Sometimes things don’t go as planned.

Last week was a recovery week for me … a mere 7 hour ‘n’ change week meant to recharge the batteries while I focused on getting in all the sleep and downtime I could manage. A lousy night’s sleep on Monday night re-tweaked an old back injury necessitating more of a walk/run than run on Tuesday and the weight session was nixed.

Wednesday as I headed out for my swim, I wasn’t feeling so hot. Chemicals I was using in the studio that day? Maybe. Whatever. It meant some deep breaths and strong thoughts to get through that workout. By Thursday morning it was pretty obvious I’d been hit over the head with the Flu-By-Four.

Sometimes downtime ends up being bedtime.

If I’ve learned anything over the last 10 months … and trust me, this is no small lesson for me … set backs are going to be part of the overall training process. And you can’t let it get you down. You can’t focus on what you HAVEN’T been able to do but keep your eye on what you have. It’s about pulling up your socks and taking the next step. Silence those negative … albeit screaming … voices in your head and stay the course.

Pretty good prep work for Ironman I’d say.

Notes To Self:

  • Sometimes things don’t go as planned. Deal.
  • Nutrition is as much a part of the plan as the physical stuff.
  • You won’t lose fitness after 3 days of downtime. Chill!

Workout:

  • Planned Time 7:45
  • Actual Time 1:33
  • Swim Distance 2232 m
  • Bike Distance 0 km
  • Run Distance 3 km
